  • 0951. Ranch Era

Aerial view of the fort as a ranch with buildings converted to barns and grain storage and trees in the parade ground.

After the fort was abandoned in the summer of 1878, nearby residents sought after this land near the river for farming. After changing hands several times, the land was purchased in 1902 by E. E. Frizell. Frizell cultivated most of the land, housing the families in his employ in the officer's quarters and converting the other buildings for farm use.

Under Frizell's ownership, the Larned Ranch became a popular spot for picnics and dancing. By the 1950's, the ranch was a tourist attraction and recognized for its historical value.
