As early as 1847, small forts were being built by the US Army just west of Dodge City. The first of these, Fort Mann, served as a way station along the trail. In 1850, it was abandoned and replaced by Fort Atkinson. Fort Atkinson became the only military post between Fort Leavenworth in eastern Kansas and Fort Union in New Mexico, but only stood only four years. There are no visible remains.
