37. Cimarron Crossing Park

Nearby was a ranch which served as a stage station on the Santa Fe Trail. The enterprise was established by William and Frank Hartwell and several others in 1866. Later, it was operated by Robert Wright and A. J. Anthony until 1868 when the continuous threat of Indian attacks forced it to be abandoned.

By the time road ranches and stage stations were being established at places such as the Cimarron Crossing, American Indians viewed trail traffic and settlement as more than just the intrusion of caravans passing through their lands. The permanence of the constant traffic and settlements threatened their lifeways and homelands. Tensions increased between Indians and settlers, traders, and the military.
